Cargo Ship Hits Brooklyn Bridge

Cargo ship scraped the bottom of the Brooklyn Bridge. No one was hurt.

A cargo ship heading south along the East River struck the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge on Friday night, said the Coast Guard.
Ali Flockerzi, spokeswoman for the Coast Guard, said that the “Rainbow Quest” left the Brooklyn Navy Yard at about 10:30pm, heading out to sea. At about 11:00pm the mast of the ship struck the bottom of the bridge.

According to Flockerzi the Metropolitan Transportation Authority had already scheduled a routine bridge closure late on Friday, so they were able to inspect the bridge during that closure. Apparently there was no damage done to the bridge, and no one was injured.
Unfortunately the closure did cause some delays of up to two hours on the roadway on the upper part of the bridge, upsetting some motorists and pedestrians. One person tweeted that:

“OMG we were walking on the Brooklyn Bridge and police came and told us we need to get off because a f-king boat hit the bridge. ALMOST DIED.”
