Williamsburg, Brooklyn was the scene of this botched crime, and for several hours after hope of finding the failed thief waned. Then, about two hours later Ayala crashed his car into a van parked on South 8th Street and Wythe Avenue, only two blocks from where he had tried to pilfer the almonds.

Ayala was arrested as he tried to flee the scene of this accident. While the police held him in custody the driver of the van from where he had taken the almonds recognized Ayala as the almost-almond thief, and identified him as such.
