“The new project at 324 Bedford Avenue epitomizes the stupidity of off-street parking requirements. The building sits at the corner of Bedford and South 2nd. It is designed by Bob Scarano, and is slowly inching its way toward completion (a stop-work order was issued in March, 2007 and the permits have all been revoked). Architecturally, [...]

Williamsburg’s Grand Ferry Park is Back
July 24th, 2008 · No Comments
Grand Ferry Park closed for a remake in October and, while the reopening was a few months later than promised, the redone park–which provides a bit of waterfront access in a part of Williamsburg where none currently exists–is open again and looking good. There is a lot of new landscaping and the park, overall, has [...]

Williamsburg Welcome Wagon is Back for Summer
July 22nd, 2008 · 1 Comment
The “Fuck Condoburg” crew is back at it again in Williamsburg after a bit of a hiatus and 80 Metropolitan is once again a favorite canvas for the welcome, pro-gentrification message. While many sites have gotten the Condoburg treatment over time, the 80 Met site has been hit repeatedly with messages of love.

“The management of N. 11th has been very responsive anytime we (as neighbors) have had a complaint. All you have to do is call them and talk to them (I know, a novel idea). When neighbors of ours complained about the tiny styrofoam the offered to come over and clean it up. When another person [...]

We call this shot we caught in Williamsburg over the weekend, “Chair, TV, Papa John’s.” We think it has that certain something that defines the ideal Burg street scene.

Giglio Dance #1: The Unique Beauty of the Lift
July 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment
Here’s our first photo gallery from the Giglio Festival on Havemeyer Street in Williamsburg. The lift took place under a blazing sun at 2PM with a crowd that seemed smaller than usual, possibly because of the blistering heat. We decided to make the “faces” of the Giglio lift a separate photo gallery.

Williamsburg Walks & Bedford Ave. Loses the Cars for a Day
July 20th, 2008 · No Comments

The first Williamsburg Walks event took place yesterday under blazing sun and opposite the Siren Festival in Coney Island. It looks like it was more lively than the efforts on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights, but almost anything on Bedford is going to have an edge in that sense. We’ll be curious [...]

“Third World Dump” Conditions on Burg Street Cleaned Up a Bit
July 19th, 2008 · 1 Comment
There is progress to report about the “Third World Dump” created by a development mess on long-suffering N. 11 Street and Roebling in Williamsburg. (In fact, there are so many construction sites in the area that some days several pile drivers are going at once at sites a few blocks apart creating a most interesting [...]

We went over to Havemeyer Street in Williamsburg last night to catch the Night Dance of the Giglio that’s part of the Giglio Festival at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. There was a crush of people (the questionable estimate was 28,000), but far less than shows up for the Sunday lifts (the last of [...]

A “Third World Dump” & “Nasty Workers” at Warehouse 11
July 18th, 2008 · 3 Comments
Once upon a time, neighbors of the construction site we used to call the Roebling Oil Field were worried about the pools of oil that bubbled to the surface as the property was dug up. Then, the oil was cleaned up and the Roebling Oil Building rose (very quickly) on the site. It’s now known [...]

Bedford Avenue Dig Still Leaving Possibly Toxic Dirt Uncovered
July 17th, 2008 · No Comments
We’ve noted the goings on at the big former lot on Bedford Avenue between N. 11 and N. 12 Street multiple times. The land was most recently a parking lot, but at one point was a paint factory and has a variety of toxic issue associated with it necessitating some cleanup before development of a [...]
