We don’t know what happened to the signs at the corner of N. 9 Street and Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg, but it does seem like it was violent. We are guessing they are victims of a vehicular homicide.

This amusing image from the Vanderbilt Yards (aka Atlantic Yards site) comes to us courtesy of Tracy Collins via our GL Flickr Pool. Whatever you do, do not park in this spot. For many reasons, all of them having nothing to do with the fallen sign.

Here’s an interesting addition to a sign at Bedford Avenue and N. 5 Street in Williamsburg that Miss Heather captured recently. We have no idea how they got there or why, but they’re certainly interesting.

Say What–Needs Replacement
June 28th, 2008 · No Comments
There are many alternate side parking signs being replaced in Park Slope. So many, in fact, that alternate side rules have been famously suspended until further notice, leading to complaints by some residents that it’s harder to park and that the streets are dirtier. We haven’t noticed either to particularly be the case, but we [...]

Say What: No Entry

There are still some googly eyes here and there in Williamsburg from a bunch that were pasted everywhere a couple of years ago. This pair, for instance, survives on a “No Entry” sign at McCarren Pool.

Say What–Alternate Side Guessing Game
June 18th, 2008 · No Comments
No, this sign isn’t from Park Slope, site of this summer’s Alternate Side Parking Follies (where some people say the temporary suspension of alternate side parking has made parking harder and some say it’s made no difference whatsoever). It’s from Williamsburg, where a bunch of signs on the South Side have been altered, perhaps to [...]

Say What–Watch the Bike
June 3rd, 2008 · No Comments
This pedestrian crossing sign in Gowanus at Union and Bond Streets has been leaning more and more and more. Yesterday, it seemed to be warning pedestrians of the bike that a child had momentarily left at the crosswalk.

Say What: Way on Wythe
May 27th, 2008 · No Comments
Talk about signs that get screwed up when construction happens, this former One Way sign that has become a “Way” sign on Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg is deserving of a DOT Award for Creative Altered Signage. Serious kudos to the contractors for the excellent work.

Say What: Brookspring Edition
May 12th, 2008 · No Comments
This is one of our favorite “Say What” photos yet, as it combines the beauty of spring with an obstructed street sign. This sign in Cobble Hill is also tagged up, but what makes it perfect are the beautiful crataegus flowers. The kind of flowers they are is not something we know, but what we [...]

Signs Under Seige: Nailed on Keap Street

This sign on Keap Street in Williamsburg has come to an inglorious end, although it would appear that automobile or vandals are the culprits rather than the nearby construction.

Signs Under Siege: Greenpoint is Smoking
May 2nd, 2008 · No Comments
This specimen comes from Diamond Street in Greenpoint, which Miss Heather, who sent us the photo, points out may be NYC’s most smoking neighborhood. So, it’s no surprise that this sign on Diamond Street carries a sort of pro-smoking message.

This “No Right Turn” comes from Noble Street in Greenpoint. It is next to a putrid-smelling chicken factory, which is, of course, on the left of the sign.

Say What–Another Construction Victim
April 22nd, 2008 · No Comments
Our innate powers of observation tell us that this parking sign, which we found on Bedford Avenue, was clearly a victim of construction. Further analysis seems to show that it was felled by some sort of street work rather than building development. Nonetheless, it is down for the count.

April 20th, 2008 · No Comments
This bent up sign comes from Herkimer and St. Andrew in what either Bed-Stuy or Crown Heights depending on one’s view of the neighborhood lines of demarcation. It was sent our way by Miss Heather, naturally.

Say What–Severed Alternate Side Sign

Was it murdered by construction equipment, a car or vandalism? In any case, this alternate side parking sign is very dead. It had lived on N. 9 Street between Havemeyer and Berry. RIP.

Say What–Hanging Parking Sign
April 10th, 2008 · No Comments
There are actually a couple of interest things about this sign, beside the hanging alternate side element. First, is the background, which is Grand Ferry Park. Work is going on and blogger INSIJS reports the park is supposed to reopen by late April. The other is the “Help keep our beaches clean” part of the [...]

Say What–Arty in Gowanus
April 4th, 2008 · No Comments
This isn’t so much an altered or battered street sign as it is an arty street sign, but we like those too. It comes from Union Street near Third Avenue in Gowanus, mere steps from the Holiday Inn Express.

Say What–One Way Dangle Edition
April 3rd, 2008 · No Comments
There are two interesting things about these signs, which come from the border of Clinton Hill and Bed-Stuy. One of them is the dangling one way sign. The other is the fact that Miss Heather, who supplied us with the photo, notes that the street is “Sandford Street,” not “Sanford Street.”

Say What–Pedestrian Upside Down Sign

The Pedestrian Upside Down Sign above comes from 147 Maujer Street in East Williamsburg. It was sent our way by Miss Heather, who also provided the shot of the actual pedestrians below. Whether one cares for the building in question is definitely a matter of taste. We’ll simply say that it is not to the [...]
