I am writing in regards to the “penny per ounce” tax that Governor Paterson is trying to have passed on April 1st of this year. I saw that there is a recent post on your blog regarding taxes “Sorry to rain on your parade…” and wanted to share some information regarding the beverage tax that Paterson is trying to have passed. This tax will affect all consumers in New York, as well as any business that sells or purchases beverages, many listed below. Please let me know if you would like to know anything else or speak with a representative from New Yorkers Against Unfair taxes. I also have a great visual of different products that will be taxed that I can send along to you if you are interested in covering this story. See below for further details.

Thanks,

New Yorkers are struggling in today’s economy, yet Governor Paterson is still wants to raise the cost of many of your favorite beverages by more than 50%.

A poll released by the Siena Research Institute says that voters oppose Governor Paterson’s proposed penny-per-ounce beverage tax 59 percent to 38 percent. Voters need their voice to be heard. Governor Paterson’s budget proposal will be decided just before April 1 and will hit the wallets of consumers and the bottom line of local supermarkets, bodegas, manufacturing facilities and distribution centers across the state.

Reports have called the Governor’s tax a “penny tax” on soda. In reality, the tax is much farther-reaching and absurdly more expensive. It will:
•	Add a penny-per-once tax onto juices that are 70% or less juice such as V8 Splash and Sunny Delight, Capri Suns and other boxed juice drinks kids love, sports drinks including Gatorade, bottled coffees and teas, sodas, and all other sugar-sweetened beverages.

Nelson Eusebio, Chairman, New Yorkers Against Unfair Taxes can discuss the details of Paterson’s proposal and how this tax will be detrimental to some of the state’s largest industries and its people.

Please feel free to reach me at: (212) 931-6175 to schedule an interview.
